갓바위 설명
갓바위는 2009 년 4 월 '목포 8 명소'중 하나이며 천연 기념물 제500으로 지정되었습니다. 갓바위는 긴 세월 동안 파도에 의한 침식작용과 소금에 의한 화학적 풍화작용에 의하여 형성되었다.상단부에 갓 모양과 그 하부에 움푹 패인 풍화혈 등의 모습으로 인해 아름다운 지형경관을 지니고 있다. 갓바위의 형태는 계속하여 변화하고 있으며 앞으로도 변화해 가는 기나긴 지질 및 지형의 과정 중에 있다.
갓바위전설
아주 먼 옛날에 병든 아버지를 모시고 소금을 팔아 살아가는 젊은이가 있었는데 살림살이는 궁핍하였지만, 아버지를 위해서는 어떠한 일도 마다하지 않는 착한 청년이었다. 아버지의 병환을 치료하기 위해 부잣집에 머슴살이로 들어가 열심히 일했으나 주인이 품삯을 주지 않아 한 달 만에 집에 돌아와 보니 아버지의 손과 발은 이미 식어있었다. 젊은이는 한 달 동안이나 병간호를 못한 어리석음을 한탄 하며, 저승에서나마 편히 쉴 수 있도록 양지바른 곳에 모시려다 그만 실수로 관을 바다 속으로 빠트리고 말았다. 불효를 통회하며 하늘을 바다 볼 수 없다며 갓을 쓰고 자리를 지키다가 죽었는데, 훗날 이곳에 두 개의바위가 솟아올라 사람들은 큰 바위를 '아버지바위' 라 하고 작은 바위를 '아들바위' 라고 불었다.
또 한 가지는 부처님과 아라한 (번뇌를 끊고 세상의 이치를 깨달은 성자)이 영산강을 건너 이곳을 지날 때 잡시 쉬던 자리에 쓰고 있던 삿갓을 놓고 간 것이 바위가 되어 이를 중바위 (스님바위)라 부른다는 이야기가 전해온다.
풍화혈 (타포니)
풍화혈은 풍화에 의해 암석에 형성된 구멍이나 동굴을 말한다. 대체로 집단적으로 나타나며, 각각의 크기는 작게는 수 cm에세 크기는 수 m에 달한다. 특히 작은 풍화혈들이 열을 이루어 반복적으로 나타나는 것을 벌집풍화라 한다. 이들의 생성 원인은 명확하게 밝혀지지 않았지만, 일반적으로 물에 노출되기 쉬운 절리나 군열대 혹은 약대를 따라 시작되는 풍화에 의해 생성된다고 여겨지고 있다. 특히 바람이나 파도에 의해 암석에 침투된 염분이 결정화됨으로써 풍화혈이 점진적으로 더 커지는 것으로 알려져 있다.

Gatbawi introduction
Gatbawi is one of the "8 famous spots of Mokpo" and was designated Natural Monument Number 500 in April 2009. It was created by the natural weathering of boulders. Gatbawi has been formed by erosion by waves and chemical weathering by salt for eons. It forms a beautiful geomorphic landscape due to its hat shaped boulders on top and the deep weathering pits (tafoni) below them. The boulders of Gatbawi are changing constantly in shape, and are still in the process of geological and topographical change.
Legends of Gatbawi
A long time ago, there was a young slat merchant who lived with his sick father. Even though he was poor, he was a kind man who would do anything to help his sick father. He worked as a farm hand for a rich estate away from his home to save money to cure his father. He did his job well but, in the end, his master didn't pay him. When he returned home after one month, he found his father's lifeless cold body. He regretted having been foolish not to care for his father for a month. What he could do at least was try to give his father a proper burial, he thought. Unfortunately, however, while moving his father's body, he dropped the coffin into the sea by mistake. He felt awful about his father's sudden underwater burial. To make amends, he remained at that spot, wearing a gat (traditional Korean hat) until his death because he could not bear to look at the sky, consumed as he was with guilt. Sometime after his death, two rocks rose from this spot, and they were called Gatbawi (meaning hat rock). People have called the bigger rock "father rock" and the smaller one "son rock."
Another story of Gatbawi claims that when Buddha and Arahan, one of his disciples who attained Nirvana, traveled across the Yeongsang River and rested at this place. They continued on their journey, leaving their hats behind. It is said that their hats became the rocks, which are also known as Monk Rocks.
Tafoni
Tafoni are cavities or hollows created by cavernous weathering in the sides of rock outcrops and boulders. they usually occur collectively with each hollow varying in size from a few centimeters to several meters. The origin of tafoni is not well understood. It is, however, believed to be the result from weathering along joints, fractures, and other weak points which increase the probability of exposure to water. The hollows are thought to be enlarged by progressive flaking of the interior surfaces and granular disintegration, probably as the result of crystallization of salt penetrated into the rocks by wind or waves.
