Mondegreens are a misunderstood or misinterpreted word or phrase resulting from a mishearing of the lyrics of a song.
Mondegreens are most often created by a person listening to a poem or a song. Where the listener, being unable to clearly hear a lyric, substitutes words that sound similar and make some kind of sense. The American writer Sylvia Wright coined the term in 1954, writing about how as a girl she had misheard the lyric "...and laid him on the green" in a Scottish ballad as "...and Lady Mondegreen"
My own personal Mondegreen is from Toto's "Africa". I seriously thought, until a few years ago, that the line "I bless the rains down in Africa" was "I guess it rains down in Africa"... hey which still makes sense... doesn't it?
