Geocache Description:

A multi stage cache placed along the historic Chile Line railroad bed.

From 1880 till 1941, the Santa Fe branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad ran from Antonito, Colorado to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Popularly known as
“The Chile Line” it was so unique, colorful and popular with train enthusiasts that a teenager growing up in Wisconsin forty years ago, knew all about the Chile Line.
The search for this cache will take you along the roadbed of the abandoned railroad. It will also extend your use of the internet, your knowledge of math and your GPS unit.
The coordinates given are a starting point you can use to find the coordinates of three USC&GS benchmarks, “S30”, “T30” and “U30”. Use the benchmark hunt link on the geocaching.com home page.
You will find these benchmarks right along side of the old railroad bed. The elevation of the benchmark has been stamped on the top of these benchmarks. This is the value that was calculated in 1933. Different datums are used today. So these numbers will not match what you will find on the benchmark hunt link. The number of feet above sea level, as stamped on the benchmark is how far away the cache is from “S30” and “T30”. The value that is stamped on “U30” does not apply to the solution of this problem. I will give you that number now.
The cache is 17489.21 ft. away from “U30”.
There are several ways to approach this problem, you can use a “GoTo” function of your GPS and alternately find the distance from “S30”, “T30” and “U30” and narrow your search down.
A straight mathematical solution is also possible. I can email an Excel spreadsheet that will do the calculation for you. A Word document is also available that you could print up and take with you into the field and along with a calculator figure the solution while hunting.
Graphical solutions are also possible using a CAD program.
Good luck.

The cache is a camo green ammo box. And the original contents are:

Deck of cards from Amtrak.
Choo choo train game.
Railroad spike.
Railroad patches of local interest.
Choo choo train pen.
Hat pins with railroad themes.
Choo choo train roller stamp-light thing.
Railroad “nut” found along the Chile Line.
Lump of coal from the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Train.

In keeping with the railroad theme of this cache, it would be fun if items brought to the cache were also railroadiana. Just a suggestion.
