Moving along the trail with number 61, you get installment number 4 of the Kings Bay story: Preparations for the new base proceeded quickly, and a small cadre of Navy personnel arrived in 1977 to help prepare for the new base, including the transfer of the property from the Army to the Navy and the termination of the small shipping agreement that was still in place. Thousands of acres of land were added, mostly by condemnation using a special master kind of taking that proceeded quickly and left many affected landowners unhappy. But the great majority of Camden County residents were thrilled with the idea of a major military base coming to the county.
