Geocache Description:

What DO you do with an old flag?  Throw it in the trash?  No!

According to US Flag Code (4 USC Sec 8 Para (k) Amended 7 July 1976), "The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

But burning isn't the only way to dispose of your old flag. The easiest respectful way to dispose of your old or damaged US flag is to bring it to a flag disposal site, such as the Marine Corp League of Downingtown (also apparently a great place to play Bingo).

How to Respectfully Retire an Old American Flag

  • Start by folding the flag in a customary triangle manner.
  • Prepare a fire large enough to burn the flag completely.
  • Place the flag in the fire.
  • While it burns, witnesses should recite the Pledge of Allegiance or salute.
  • End the ceremony with a moment of silence before burying the flag's ashes.

Find this geocache, and you'll know where to dispose or your old or damaged US flags.

Placed with permission of the commandant and first vice-commandant of the Marine Corp League.

Congrats to Rrrbt202 on the FTF, and thank you for your proper flag disposal.
