Geocache Description:

A nice walk which will take you to the Caterham viewpoint and back. You'll have to walk collecting the numbers and put them into the formula to find the final cache. There are 10 stages, the walk including getting the cache will total around 3.5 miles. If driving up from Caterham there is plenty of parking on Tupwood Lane before the start of the footpath.

The given co-ordinates are for the first stage. The footpath starts on Tupwood Lane. White sign on brick wall, number of lines of text = A. Interestingly the building through the arch and to the left is a grade 2 listed building, built for to Queen Victoria's dentist! Footpath goes to the right of this sign.

Continue onto the road and turn right, then after around 60m turn left down the footpath between the houses. Stage 2- white sign LHS on brick. Numbers of letters in second line (1 word) = B

At the bottom turn left onto Harestone Valley Road. Stage 3 - Plaque to right of gate (C)5th March 1984

Continue along road, branch left continuing on Harestone Valley Road. Stage 4 - Go through gate on right hand side to read the sign about the woods. Find the grid of the woodland, how many squares in the grid? (D)4 (CURRENTLY MISSING - Instead look for a 2 digit number in a red circle outside the gate, add digits together = D)

Continue along the road, turning into a footpath. You'll reach a house, at the fence turn right and walk up to the viewpoint. Stage 5 - Bench 194(E) - 2017

Looking at the viewpoint turn left and walk along the North Downs Way. You'll reach a bench. Stage 6 - Remembering who? letters in name = (F). Take the left fork at the bench.

Continue along this path, making sure you keep to the path as it turns left past the large logs and ivy covered tree. The path will take you up past Fosterdown Fort. Be careful not to take a path into the Fort! There is a very inviting gap in the fence where it looks like the path could go. Instead continue along the footpath following the fence line. History time! Fosterdown Fort was a mobilisation centre constructed during the 1890s to house ammunition and equipment as part of the London Defence Scheme. Also known as Pilgrim Fort, it was one of thirteen forts constructed in an arc around the south and east of London to act as invasion. The scheme was abandoned in 1906 and is now an education centre for schools. Stage 7 - Number on stone 2(G). Interestingly the WD on the stone stands for War Department, stones were placed around land belonging to the the war department.

You will come out on the road, turn right. Stage 8 - Telegragh pole 6(H)9.

Continue and turn left down Harestone Hill. Stage 9 - One of the numbers in yellow H (they are the same) = J. Bear right after stage 9.

Continue to stage 10 - Telegraph pole white disc digit = K.

Thats all the numbers collected. Continue onto the road, turn right back up the footpath and you'll be back to where you started.

Now for the cache! It's a short(ish) walk away.
