~~~~MISE À JOUR DU 30/09/2019 Le poteau où était caché la boîte a été enlevé et la boîte a disparu, j'en ai donc mis une nouvelle près du panneau indiquant l'altitude du col, au pied d'un petit arbuste un peu en hauteur ; sur la gauche quand on regarde Mafate~~~~~~Voilà une manière d'entrer dans Mafate qui change du classique GR1 par le Col des Boeufs, surpeuplé les weekends et pendant les vacances !
De plus il permet une magnifique incursion dans la superbe forêt de cryptomérias de la Plaine des Merles (Salazie) avant de basculer dans Mafate.
Le Col de Fourche, c'est l'accès historique à Mafate : c'était effectivement l'unique sentier avant la construction de la route forestière qui arrive au Col des Bœufs aujourd'hui.
Au cœur du Parc National de La Réunion, à 1 946 mètres d’altitude, le Col de Fourche se situe sur la ligne de crête entre les cirques de Mafate et de Salazie.
Il faut d'abord descendre dans la Plaine des Merles par la piste forestière (fermée aux véhicules) puis prendre à droite l'agréable sentier pratiquement plat à l'ombre des cryptomérias. Au prochain croisement commence la montée vers le Col de Fourche, courte mais au plus fort dénivelé, faite de lacets serrés et de hautes marches en béton. Le col n'est plus qu'à quelques dizaines de mètres offre un paysage plus sauvage mais aussi beaucoup plus escarpé que celui du Col des Bœufs.
Accès routier
Depuis la RN2, prenez la sortie en direction de Salazie. Suivez ensuite la D48, traversez la petite ville de Salazie, puis la D52 jusqu’à Grand Îlet et prenez la Route Forestière du Haut Mafate (RF13) jusqu’au parking Petit Col (terminus de la route).
Parking conseillé si vous passez au moins une nuit sur place : payant : 3€/jour, 12€/nuit. À la journée le parking gratuit est suffisant. Bonne marche !!
Après le parking, vous remontez la piste forestière et il ne vous reste plus qu'à suivre les panneaux "col de Fourche".

~~UPDATE SEPTEMBER 30 2019 / Indeed the post where the box was hidden has been removed so I put a new cache near the "Col de Fourche" sign, at the foot of a small bush, on the left when you look towards Mafate~~~~~ This is an alternative to the classic GR1 passing by Col des Boeufs, overcrowded on weekends and during holidays! In addition, it allows a magnificent incursion into the superb cryptomeria forest of the Plaine des Merles (Salazie) before accessing to Mafate.
«Col de Fourche» is the historical access to Mafate: it was indeed the only path before the construction of the gravel road that stops at the parking near Col des Bœufs today.
In the heart of Reunion Island National Park, at an altitude of 1,946 metres, Col de Fourche is located on the ridge line between the Mafate and Salazie caldeiras.
You must first walk down to Plaine des Merles following the forest track (closed to vehicles) and then take the pleasant path to the right, which is nearly flat in the shade of the cryptomeria. At the next crossing, the ascent to the Col de Fourche begins, short but at the steepest gradient, made of tight bends and high concrete steps. The pass is only a few dozen metres away and offers a wilder but also much steeper landscape than that of the Col des Bœufs.
Road access
From the RN2, exit to Salazie. Then follow the D48, and then the D52 to Grand Îlet and finally Route Forestière du Haut Mafate (RF13) to the Petit Col car park (terminus of the road).
Parking recommended if you spend at least one night on site: charged: 3€/day, 12€/night. On daytime, free parking is ok.
After the car park, you only have to follow the "col de Fourche" signs.
