Pvt. Samuel Hunt was listed as the only casualty on the U S Dragoons expedition to the Rocky Mountains. He died on Sept. 11, 1835, on the return of the 1645 mile trip from Ft. Leavenworth and back along the Santa Fe Trail.
This is the earliest known gravesite of a soldier on the Santa Fe Trail.
