If you've lived in or visited Spokane in the summer you know Riverfront Park is the center of many lively activities. You may also know the beginnings of this large park took place to house the extraordinary World's Fair Expo '74. Also to happen that very year was the first Bloomsday run, though most sources would tell you it began in 1977. To celebrate the early spring blooming flowers and the opening ceremonies of the World's Fair on Saturday May 4, 1974, the citizens of Spokane held a foot race on Wednesday May 1, 1974. At 1:30pm the starting gun was fired, and 50 participants began their race through the park. None of them ever finished. A bridge crossing the Spokane River (near the current upper falls dam) collapsed, taking every runner with it. The tragedy lead to the discredit of the 1974 race so not to discourage the excitement of the World's Fair. It is said that you can still hear echoes of the runners footsteps on the bridge from time to time. The Bloomsday run continues annually, but celebrates the inaugural race May 1, 1977.
