Porta Galliera appartiene alla terza e più recente cerchia di mura della città di Bologna, la Circla.
Costruita intorno al XIII secolo, la cerchia correva tutto intorno al perimetro della città, in corrispondenza di quelli che ora sono i Viali. Questa cinta muraria, di cui ora ci rimangono solo le porte e alcuni brevi tratti di muro, si estendeva per più di sette chilometri ed era circondata da un fossato sull'esterno.
Tra il 1902 e il 1906 le mura furono abbattute ma, grazie anche all'intervento di alcuni notabili dell'epoca, le porte vennero mantenute integre ad eccezione di Porta San Mamolo e Porta Sant'Isaia.
Porta Galliera, dopo la sua costruzione, venne restaurata nel 1598, in occasione della visita di Papa Clemente VII e fu poi nuovamente ricostruita nella forma odierna tra il 1660 e il 1663.
Vicino alla vecchia porta, si possono osservare anche le rovine della famosa Fortezza di Galliera, antica fortificazione cittadina e simbolo del potere dello stato pontifcio, che venne costruita e distrutta cinque volte a testimoniare la tensione dei rapporti tra Bologna e Roma.

Porta Galliera belongs to the third and most recent city walls ring of Bologna, the Circla.
Built around the XIIIth century, the city walls surrounded the whole city's perimeter, along the streets that nowadays are called i Viali. At the time the city walls had a length of more than seven kilometres but nowadays only the gateways and small portions of walls remain.
Between 1902 and 1906 the walls were demolished but, thanks to the intercession of many important men, all the gateways were saved, except for Porta San Mamolo and Porta Sant'Isaia.
After its construction, Porta Galliera, was renewed in 1598, for the visit of the Pope Clemente VII and then it was again rebuilt in its nowadays appearance between 1600 and 1663.
Close to the old Gateway, it is possible to admire the ruins of the famous Fortezza Galliera, the old city fortress, a symbol of the pope's power in Bologna, that was built and destroyed five times because of the tense relations between Rome and Bologna.
