Geocache Description:

Cache #55

Another addition to the Greater Hume Back Roads Series - this one combines my desire to place a cache near this interesting reserve in a position that may prove a challenge to reach. The cache is not in the Council reserve, but nearby and there is plenty of safe parking. As usual, take care with kids and dogs here (is a busy road) and snakes may be an issue - particularly when there is water in the swamp.

Gum Swamp Reserve is a High Conservation Area and is listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia. It consists of a River Red Gum swamp woodland surrounded by a Grassy Box woodland and fills with water from Petries Creek and drains out into Billabong Creek. Apparently it fills every 4 years in 10, but not certain if it has filled since we have lived in Albury (5 years). The reserve is a favourite for bush walking, camping, picnicking, horse riding and birdwatching at any time of the year and when water levels allow, is a great place for canoeing.

The cache was placed with no tools or equipment, though it may be easier to access if you do have assistance (particularly if you are vertically challenged!).

If there is water we would love to see a photo. Enjoy!
