Geocache Description:

If you look roughly North up the street from this geocache you will be able to see the New Milton Water Tower. The tower has a rich history. It was commissioned to be built in 1889. Building was completed in 1900. Standing at 83 feet and 7 inches tall, the tower can hold 200,000 gallons of water. During World War II, attempts were made to camouflage the tower with Hessian and tree branches. This unfortunately led the German Military to believe that it was a target of significant military importance. On 8th August 1942 a German bomber attempted to destroy the tower. The bomb missed, landing instead on Spencer Road, the very road you are standing on now. Sadly, a Mrs Richardson was killed in the blast. German radio announced that they had destroyed "A fort" in New Milton. On 29th of October 1974 the New Milton Water Tower was listed as a building of special architectural or historic interest, protecting it from demolition or alterations which would alter its appearance or character.
