About Llanwern Station
Llanwern railway station is a former station serving Llanwern on the east side of the city of Newport. It was opened with the South Wales Railway in 1850 and closed to passengers on 12 September 1960 in preparation for the building of Llanwern steelworks. It was closed completely on 16 April 1961.
After the run-down of the steelworks and the building of housing on the site, the future of Llanwern seems likely to be busy and the station is also under consideration for some part in a broader Severnside Parkway scheme, to relieve the pressure of commuter traffic and its parking on the village of Rogiet and Severn Tunnel Junction. (Wikipedia, Llanwern railway station)
In recent years various plans to reopen the station have been put forward to the council. Most recently Transport for Wales have submitted plans to begin development of the station as part of a larger scale scheme for the area including a 150m platform, 1,000 space car park.
The former site of the train station is now inaccessible however this cache is located up the road near a relic that remains from when the station was open.
The cache is a small clip-lock container with a small twist to get the log, hand made so will need a gentle touch.
