An der Rippiger Kopp steht man am Rand der südlichen Schichtstufe des Luxemburger Sandsteins (unterer Lias), die hier an mit einer großen Verwerfung als Bruchstufe auftritt. Auf der einen Seite der Straße steht der Stufenbildner Luxemburger Sandstein an, auf der anderen Seite hat man einen weiten Blick in die weite Landschaft des Sockelbildners der Mergel (Keuper).
At the Rippiger Kopp you stand at the edge of the southern cuesta of the Luxembourg sandstone (lower Lias), which occurs here with a large fault as breakage. On one side of the road is the step former Luxembourg sandstone, on the other side you have a wide view of the vast landscape of the pedestal former of marlstone (Keuper).

Als Schichtstufe bzw. Schichtstufenlandschaft bezeichnet die Geomorphologie eine Gelände- bzw. Reliefform, die sich aus leicht geneigten, fast parallel übereinander liegenden Gesteinsschichten aufbaut. Ihre Ausprägung und Steilheit hängt im Wesentlichen von der Verwitterungsbeständigkeit und Lage der sie aufbauenden Gesteine ab.
A cuesta is a hill or ridge with a gentle slope on one side, and a steep slope on the other. In geology the term is more specifically applied to a ridge where a harder sedimentary rock overlies a softer layer, the whole being tilted somewhat from the horizontal. This results in a long and gentle backslope called a dip slope that conforms with the dip of resistant strata, called caprock. Step- and pedestal-former
Idealerweise steht am Beginn der Entwicklung einer Schichtstufe meist Hebung und damit verbundene Schrägstellung eines Schichtpakets mit obenauf liegender widerständigerer und untenliegender nachgiebigerer Gesteinsschicht um etwa 1-5°. Zur Ausbildung der Stufe kommt es durch Erosion bis zur untenliegenden nachgiebigeren Schicht. Die Schicht des obenauf liegenden, abtragungsresistenteren („härteren“) Gesteins heißt Stufenbildner und bildet die erhabenen Teile der Stufe. Der Sockelbildner ist die Schicht des untergelagerten, weniger abtragungsresistenten („weicheren“) Gesteins.
Ideally, at the beginning of the development of a layer stage, the elevation and associated inclination of a layer package with the uppermost more resistant and lower-lying layer of rock is usually about 1-5 °. The formation of the step occurs by erosion to the underlying compliant layer. The layer of the upper, more erosion-resistant rock is called step-former and forms the raised parts of the step. The pedestal former is the layer of underlying, less erosion-resistant ("softer") rock.
