The Camino de Santiago (Frances) is a 500 mile long walking and biking route across Northern Spain from the Pyrennes on the border with France to the Cathedral in Santiago Composela. According to tradition, the Apostle James is buried in the cathedral, and beginning in the Middle Ages through today, pilgrimages from all across Europe have been made to this holy site along the Camino.
In the 1980's interest in the Camino was revived after a dormant period of nearly 300 years with the publication of a guidebook, and a significant investment by the Spanish government in upgrading the path, providing clear signage, and encouraging the development of hostels (albergues), restaurants & cafes.
Today, well over 250,000 people from all over the world walk the Camino every year enjoying spiritual refreshment, physical challenges, adventure, intercultural encounters, great food, and many other gratifying experiences.
There are several other caminos across Spain in addition to the French route.....the Camino del Norte beginning in Irun and continuing through Bilbao and Santander; the Camino Portugues beginning in Lisbon; the Camino Ingles beginning in A Coruna; the Via de la Plata beginning in Seville; and the Camino de Levante beginning in Valencia. All of these are less traveled than the Camino Frances and provide fewer options for housing and eating, but still provide a wonderful opportunity for seeing the beauties and uniqueness of Spain at a walking/biking speed.
I made this journey in September and October of 2015. It took me 31 days to walk the 500 miles, with 3 rest days in Pamplona, Bourgos and Leon, walking an average of 16 miles a day. I met folks from all over the world along the way. It was an awesome experience. I also walked the Camino Portugues from Porto to Santiago (150 miles) in Sept./Oct. 2019.
