CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A celebration, years in the making, took place in Chester on Sunday. The largest flagpole in the Commonwealth is now flying an American flag. When driving along Interstate 95, a new landmark will greet you. "The large American flag," said Chesterfield Police Chief Col. Jeffrey Katz. "That symbol of unity. And they're going to look at it and they're going to know exactly where they are." At 212 feet, the flagpole stands as the largest in Virginia flying an American flag outside USA Iron and Metal's headquarters. "Waving high in the sky above every cloud," said owner of USA Iron and Metal, Monique Smith. "We hope this memorable day will make you proud." Crowds gathered for the ceremony, including veterans, first responders and families from Central Virginia. "This is a national landmark and we are all a part of it," Chief Katz said. A community witnessed a moment in history. "This flag will honor all those whose lives protect this land," Smith said. "Unity and love of country we hope it will send."
