Pole Hill is the site of a tumulus, or earthern barrow mound, and is listed as a Site of Regional Significance. Barrow mounds were a method of burial during Neolithic times (4000-2500 BC). Pole Hill mound stands approx 1.5m high and measures 18.5m from north to south. It has previously been cut into during ploughing, and displays rig and furrow marks on the west side within the enclosure.
In prehistoric times, human remains would be interred under barrow mounds, placed within small cists and cinerary urns. This mound was opened in 1860 but records state nothing was found.
Please do not cross the enclosure fence circling the mound itself; it is a scheduled archaeological site protected by law. The cache can be reached from the roadside at the given coordinates. Please use specified parking as road is narrow at cache site.
