Conference of the Birds Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

BendSinister: Time to shut up shop. If only as an impediment to placing more stuff. :)

Many thanks to the dozen or so people wot purported to get something out of my silly cache ideas over the last 5 years!

This cache is still in place, but not for long. Let me know if you need more than a day or two to sign the log.

EDIT 13/7: Cache was removed -- many thanks to the fabulous final finder. :)

Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the published coordinates. That's not a great place for birds. Nor for pedestrians. You can determine the cache's location by considering the following story. There's nothing hidden on the page and you certainly don't need to research Persian literature or free jazz.

Imagine four birds residing in Melbourne's south-east. Eastern puzzlefinches, to be precise. Let's call them Agnetha, Anni-Frid, Benny and Björn.

In common with all puzzlefinches, the aforementioned possess extremely good long-distance vision such that they are able to accurately determine one anothers' locations across vast distances.

Being a petite species they're constantly anxious about the threat posed by birds of prey, such that they always seek a flying companion as their first priority during any trip, even though this makes their total journey longer. This is perhaps their most distinctive feature: they always minimise solo flight time.

One day Agnetha, Anni-Frid, Benny and Björn decided it was time for a meeting. The details are sketchy, but we do know the following:

BJÖRN lives at the top of the steel tower at Springvale Fire Station. On the day in question, he was the first to leave for the meeting. He headed off in the direction of his nearest puzzlefinch neighbour at 11:30:08 AM at a speed of 0.8764 metres/second.

ANNI-FRID, meanwhile, was at rest on the cross on the largest dome atop St Stephen the Archdeacon Serbian Orthodox Church before she set out. She took to the air at 11:41:34 AM, immediately attaining a speed of 2.218 metres/second.

AGNETHA was near the bus-stop bench immediately in front of Aspendale Presbyterian Church when she realised it was time to leave. At 11:45:03 AM she set out in the direction of her nearest neighbour at a speed of 1.611 metres/second.

BENNY was the last to set out. He had started his day by building a new nest, immediately beneath the cross on top of Saint Brigid's Parish Church. He launched himself into the air at 11:52:07 AM and sped off at 1.332 metres/second, perhaps having noticed that a companion was already drawing near.

It's not clear that the birds had a specific destination in mind at the outset. But we do know that they formed pairs at the same moment. At midday, in fact. And, some time later, they all immediately settled on the branches of a tree at the exact point at which all four met.

Word on the street is that they left something at that location. At the very least, there's said to be a logsheet there.

For simplicity you can assume that (i) solo puzzlefinches fly at a constant speed and, apart from the requirement to pair up, always take the shortest route; (ii) pairs of puzzlefinches fly at the speed of the slowest member of the pair; (iii) they don't pause when they change direction; and (iv) there are no other puzzlefinches in the vicinity beyond those named.

If you've solved this one and found yourself in possession of a bonus numerical code, you may wish to use the latter to solve this puzzle's kinda-sorta sequel, GC8KT2G. It has a vaguely similar vibe and is not toooo far away.
