The world of agents and spies - famous characters
Although spies and agents act secretly and their identities are not disclosed, there are some we know. As fictional characters and movie heroes or even real agents who have come into the limelight by the press discovering their activity, their operations and actions in secrecy fascinate us.
Jules C. Silber
Jules C. Silber (the "C." stands for "(1.)"), was a spy for Germany during World War I and worked in the middle of the enemy, in the (2. / 2 words – English!). His identity was never revealed and he returned to Germany in (3.). There he wrote his autobiography in 1932 under the title "(4. / 3 words – German!)".
Based on this biography, Ronald Seth published a book in (5.) titled "(6. / 5 words – English!)" in which he shared the exploits of this fabulous master of forgotten espionage.
Silber was probably born in (7.), his exact date of birth is unknown, estimated some day between 1870 and 1880. Even as a teenager, he left Germany and settled in South Africa. There he learned next to English (8.) and (9.). In the Second (10. / German!), he offered himself as a translator and accompanied about 1,500 prisoners to (11.) and (12.).
He later immigrated to the United States, where he lived for several years. When the war between Great Britain and Germany was declared in (13.), Silber showed patriotism. He wanted to help his country and offered his services as a censor at the post office in England. With this position he was able to obtain information that was useful for the German war effort. In (14. / 2 words) he gave a contact address to the German ambassador. However, since he had no passport with which he could enter England, he travelled via (15. / German!)and submitted documents about his activities in South Africa and India, in which not a single word of his German nationality was mentioned.
In England, he arrived without a passport in (16.), where he was first interrogated. In the evening he was able to travel to London and started his work as a censor on (17. / date – dd.mm.yyyy).
While working in the post office, he was able to forward important information by letter. He even climbed up to the management level, gaining access to very secret documents. His actions were never discovered and after the end of the war he waited a few years before he could return to Germany without suspicion.
