Geocache Description:

Waterval Onder.

I have placed this cache with the knowledge of the owner of the local coffee shop. Although stealth is always required, should you get stuck, feel free to ask around, someone may just be able to assist. Although the Museum is only open between 09h00 and 16h00, the cache is not on the museum premises and is accessible during daylight hours.

Waterval Onder is a small village situated at the base of the escarpment on the banks of the Elands River in Emakhazeni Local Municipality, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The name means "below the waterfall" in Dutch, due to its position below the 75m high Elands River waterfall. The village did not develop into a town like its sister town of Waterval Boven, which is above the waterfall. Both settlements were established in 1895 because of the construction of the Pretoria - Delagoa Bay Railway Line built by the Netherlands-South African Railway Company (NZASM). President Paul Kruger lived in Waterval Onder before he left South Africa, via Mozambique, during the Anglo-Boer War. His Krugerhof House in Waterval Onder was proclaimed a national monument and is well worth a visit. The town is also home to one of South Africa’s greatest mysteries, involving lost gold and resulting in one of the world’s greatest treasure hunts – "The Search for The Kruger Millions!" The story goes that President Paul Kruger removed around R1.5million of gold from the National Treasury. While some was used in the war effort, and some taken into exile, legend has it that a substantial amount was buried in the Lowveld in readiness for his victorious return. So where does 'X' mark the spot? Best guess is between Waterval Onder and eNtokozweni, formerly Machadodorp – so are you ready to get digging? This is a small quaint village with a huge heritage and certainly somewhere for any South African history fan or treasure hunter to explore.
