Geocache Description:

This cache is on the Takaka Hill which is notable for its karst topography. This terrain is characterised by barren, rocky ground, caves, underground streams and tomo or sinkholes. You will have noticed the rocks on either side of the road, many show signs of being eroded by rain. Rainwater dissolves carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the resulting solution is slightly acidic and over extended periods of time dissolves the relatively soft limestone rock.

OK, you’ve noticed the rocks, but have you noticed any tomo or sinkholes? I noticed this one today. You might be disappointed that it’s not a bottomless hole but I’m mighty pleased I wasn’t standing in the vicinity the day it was formed.

There’s plenty of room to park near the cache but there’s always lots of traffic so do take care.
