Geocache Description:

Welcome to another addition to the popular church micro series. This one will bring you St Mary’s, Crosthwaite.  This is a simple multi with the final location only a few minutes’ walk away.

St Mary’s, Crosthwaite

You do not need to enter the church to find the cache but you are invited to do so to see the limestone font dating from 15C or 16C just inside the main doorway. It was retired after more than 300 years’ service when the new font was provided for the present church. Also the vicar would love you to sign the visitors book .

The church in the picture was built between 1877 and 1885 following a gift from the Argles brothers and agreement from the Bishop of Carlisle that the old church, that had stood since the 1500s, was dilapidated.  There was a church in the village even before this, probably dating back to the 1100s. A detailed booklet on the history in available in the church.

Other items of interest in the church are the Victorian stained glass windows, the organ built by Wilkinson of Kendal in 1865 which is before the present church was built and many memorials to local people. The church has six bells that are rung regularly by visiting teams of bell ringers who come to Crosthwaite from all over the country.

The church is usually open daily during day light hours.

This geocache is not at the given co-ordinates which take you to a bench with a splendid view.  On the bench is an inscription that ends with two dates. Take a note of the numbers, they are A,B,C,D,E,F,G & H

The cache is a small click-lock box. It can be found at

N 54 18. (D + E)  E D     W002 51. E (B-A) (C+ H)

The cache has been placed with grateful help and encouragement from Rev Michael Woodcock. He would be very pleased if you signed his visitors book.
