Geocache Description:

A PET tube hidden at a historic spot in the Cookhouse area.

Thomas Pringle and his party of Scottish 1820 settlers changed wagons drivers and oxen at the Roodewal military camp in this vicinity. After two days of rest they crossed the Great Fish River and proceeded to their settlement area in the Baviaans River Valley

This is the terrain of Fort Roodewal from where Lt. Frans Rousseau left on the morning of the 9th of October 1815 with 8 soldiers to arrest Freek Bezuidenhout. The next day he gave the order to shoot Freek Bezuidenhout after he resisted arrest. This event was the beginning of one of the most unfortunate incidents in the history of South Africa, the Slachtersnek Rebellion. See The Somerset East History for more detail. There is a cache at the spot where the rebels were hanged - Slagtersnek-Rebellie

Close by are the graves of the van Aardts
