Il “Castelliere” era un abitato composto di capanne che sorgeva in cima ad un’altura, intorno alla quale venivano costruite una o più mura a secco, a protezione dell’abitato stesso (si trattava di un sistema difensivo più tardi definito col nome di “vallo”).
I castellieri apparivano come una massa compatta di pietrame, d’altezza variabile tra i 2 ed i 5 metri, e proteggevano le popolazioni (3.000 anni fa) dagli attacchi degli animali o di popolazioni ostili. In questi grandi recinti dal diametro di 150/200 metri, venivano tenuti gli animali e le riserve alimentari, risorse da cui dipendeva la sopravvivenza dei gruppi qui insediati.
Tali costruzioni testimoniano una società pastorale stanziale, legata alle alture piuttosto che alla pianura: all’epoca la pianura sottostante doveva apparire diversamente; il Timavo probabilmente seguiva un altro corso e originava una palude malsana.

The "Castelliere" was a settlement composed of huts that stood on top of a hill, around which were built one or more dry walls, to protect the town itself (it was a defensive system later defined with the name of "rampart").
The castellieri appeared as a compact mass of stones, ranging in height between 2 and 5 meters, and protected the populations (3,000 years ago) from the attacks of animals or hostile populations. In these large enclosures with a diameter of 150/200 meters, animals and food reserves were kept, resources on which the survival of the groups settled here depended.
These buildings testify to a sedentary pastoral society, linked to the heights rather than to the plain: at that time the plain below had to look different; the Timavo probably followed another course and originated an unhealthy swamp.
