Geocache Description:

The Candlestick is a prominent landmark in the environs of Whitehaven Harbour.
The Candlestick Chimney is the only surviving part of a colliery engine house built in 1850 by Sidney Smirke. It is actually a ventilation shaft for Wellington Pit. The pit was sunk in 1838 and closed in 1932. A major disaster claimed the lives of 136 men and children on the 11th of May 1910. The chimney still vents methane from the disused workings, and a lightening strike in 1984 ignited the gas for five hours.
The starting coordinates should take you to a memorial to The Wellington Pit Disaster. If they don't you need to be one level higher from the car park. Climb the steps either behind the '3 cannons' sculpture; or the steps behind the 'End of an era' sculpture. Step free access can be gained by following the road beyond the barrier, passing the 'Wheel'
Once you have gathered the information from the memorial you follow a tarmacadam path up to the Candlestick. Set into this path are some stone slabs with carved inscriptions, and along the coping stones on top the adjacent wall are more inscriptions. Below the Candlestick is a mosaic and plaque. From some, or all, of these, find the value of the letters, and then substitute them into the following formulae. The information below is set out in a random manner, not in the order you may expect to find it.

A = with a bottle of cold *** (how many letters?)
B = they were working at B years of age.
C = at the Candlestick, how many sides are there to the stone plinth?
D = I was a brusher, a blaster .... (how many jobs are mentioned, include brusher and blaster)
E = Bishop of Carlisle, 1E May 1984.
F = in living memory it was *** (a colour, how many letters?)
G = number of letters in the word that describes 'sails'
H = *** Taylor and *** Savage. (Number of letters in either Christian name.)
K = beautiful, we've got the sea ..... we've got the mountains. (How many time does the word 'side' appear in this inscription?)
L = Welllington Pit 184L - 1932
