The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates - you could go round and round like a ball in a roulette wheel but you wouldn't find the cache.
My first grown-up job after finishing university was as a casino dealer at Christchurch Casino. Roulette was my favourite game to deal so this cache is a memory of that time.
Roulette is one of the oldest games of chance played in modern casinos today. Historians believe it may have been invented by Blaise Pascal as part of his work on perpetual motion. A croupier spins a ball in a roulette wheel, the wheel going in one direction and the ball in the other. The addition of "hazards" on the wheel contributes to the randomisation of the outcome of the spin. The ball falls into a compartment on the wheel numbered between 0 (sometimes there's 00 too) and 36. Each number is assigned a colour, red or black, with the exception of zero and zero-zero, which are green.
To play, players place their chips on the numbered layout. Chips can be placed directly on the number or on a combination of numbers. Each combination has a different payout.
A: Straight Up - choose any one number by placing the chip directly on the number - pays 35 to 1
B: Split - choose any two numbers by placing the chip between the two numbers - pays 17 to 1
C: Street - choose three numbers in a row on the layout by placing the chip at the end of the row of numbers - pays 11 to 1
D: Corner - choose four numbers by placing the chip on the corner of four numbers with the chip partly in all four numbers - pays 8 to 1
E: Six Line - choose six numbers in two rows on the layout by placing the chip at the end of the two rows of numbers with the chip partly in both rows - pays 5 to 1.
You can also bet on red or black, odd or even, columns and dozens but we don't need to cover those today to solve the puzzle.
Roulette dealers become very good at their 35, 17, 11, 8 and 5 times tables! They also learn to memorise common combinations of bets like a straight up and a split (52), or a corner and a split (25) to help calculate payouts even more quickly. Beginner dealers will often use flashcards to help learn to memorise these - they are called picture bets.
To solve the puzzle, you are going to take on the role of the dealer to calculate some payouts. Work out the numbers from the six picture bets to get the coordinates for the cache. You have the benefit of doing it at home without impatient players waiting!
