Julia Donaldson CBE (born 16 September 1948) is an English writer, playwright and performer. She is best known for for her books for children, which include The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's Child, The Highway Rat, Room on the Broom, Monkey Puzzle and Stick Man. Many of these are illustrated by Axel Scheffler and several of these have been made into short animated films. The majority of her work however is intended for school use, including her Songbirds phonetic reading scheme.
Her work for older children includes the Princess Mirror-Belle trilogy and Running on the Cracks. She was Children's Laureate from 2011-2013 and received an MBE in 2011, before being raised to a CBE in the 2019 New Year Honours list.
