10 years ago, I sat on a fence right in this spot with a boy named Tom. As we sat, I told him that I had planted fruity cereal back here to grow myself some cereal trees. He laughed at me, jokingly saying that he was "pretty sure that that's not where cereal comes from." I said, "No, really. You just bury a handful of your favorite cereal, water it regularly, and it'll grow into a cereal tree." He was unconvinced still, but I dared him to pull a leaf off of the bush behind us, rip that leaf in half, and then give it a sniff. Now, Tom had no idea what sassafras was or that we were sat right beside some, but sassafras is a lovely, edible plant that smells just like fruity cereal when torn open. I wish I had a picture of the look he had on his face when he smelled it. The poor kid fell off of that fence.
