O convento de Santo António em Santa Cruz da Lagoa
“Desde o século XV, centúria em que se inicia o povoamento dos Açores, documenta-se no arquipélago a ação pioneira da Ordem de São Francisco que se instala em oito das nove ilhas açorianas, excetuando-se apenas o Corvo. A atividade da Ordem, orientada para a educação religiosa das novas comunidades, impôs a construção de infraestruturas nas zonas mais densamente povoadas da ilha. Na sequência do cataclismo de 1522 que arrasou Vila Franca, à época capital micaelense, acentua-se um processo de gradual deslocalização do centro de poder, para a zona poente da ilha, que beneficia a Lagoa e sobretudo Ponta Delgada. É no decurso deste moroso processo, que o capitão do donatário e 1.º conde de Vila Franca Rui Gonçalves da Câmara (1550-1601) edifica uns Paços no atual jardim de Santa Cruz, construção que o 3.º conde de Vila Franca, seu neto D. Rodrigo da Câmara (1594-1662), oferece em 1641 à Ordem de São Francisco. A doação do edifício e terras destinou-se à construção e sustento de um convento, de que aquele benfeitor foi o primeiro padroeiro. O conjunto original foi muito danificado pela erupção do Pico João Ramos, em 1652, situação que veio a determinar o seu posterior abandono e edificação do atual convento a norte do primitivo, obra que se concluiu no século XVIII”.

The convent of Saint Anthony in Santa Cruz da Lagoa
"Since the fifteenth century, when the settlement of the Azores began, the pioneering action of the Order of Saint Francis is documented in the archipelago, which is installed in eight of the nine Azorean islands, except for Corvo. The activity of the Order, oriented to the religious education of the new communities, imposed the construction of infrastructures in the most densely populated areas of the island. Following the cataclysm of 1522 that devastated Vila Franca in the time of the capital of Micaela, a process of gradual relocation of the power center to the western part of the island, benefiting the Lagoa and especially Ponta Delgada, is accentuated. It is in the course of this lengthy process that the captain of the grantee and 1st Count of Vila Franca Rui Gonçalves da Câmara (1550-1601) builds some Paços in the present garden of Santa Cruz, construction that the 3rd Count of Vila Franca, his grandson D. Rodrigo da Câmara (1594-1662), offered in 1641 to the Order of St. Francis. The donation of the building and land was destined to the construction and sustenance of a convent, of which that benefactor was the first patron. The original settlement was badly damaged by the eruption of Pico João Ramos in 1652, a situation that led to its subsequent abandonment and construction of the current convent north of the primitive, a work that was completed in the 18th century. "
