Geocache Description:

Chelsea Embankment Gardens Chelsea Embankment Gardens was created c.1874 when the Thames was embanked, the land was reclaimed and the road constructed under the supervision of Sir Joseph Bazalgette. The low level sewer from Hammersmith that runs all the way to Beckton is under the road here. There is a statue dedicated to the design and construction just across the road by the bridge. The garden area is in two sections either side of Albert Bridge it has ornamental bedding, paths and seating, with shrubbery backing Cheyne Walk, and within the western section are a number of statues commemorating famous local residents such as the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. There is also a memorial to the Machine Gun Corps, the boy David although this is a fibreglass copy because the original was stolen in 1969. Just across Cheyne Walk behind the gardens is a square blue plaque which reveals that King Henry VIII’s Manor House stood here until 1753 when it was demolished after the death of its last occupant, Sir Hans Sloane. Nos. 19 to 26 Cheyne Walk were built on its site in 1759-65. The old manor house garden still lies beyond the end wall of Cheyne Mews and contains some mulberry trees said to have been planted by Queen Elizabeth I. The Eastern section has a large statue of Thomas Carlyle which was erected in 1882 by the sculptor J E Boehm, this is the section you will be most interested in as a cacher but the whole area makes a pleasant stroll. You may also admire the very pretty Albert Bridge from your perch while completing the administration it is particularly attractive at night and deserves a cache of it's own. The cache is a micro but tweezers will probably not be needed this time.
