Porta delle Lame appartiene alla terza e più recente cerchia di mura della città di Bologna, la Circla.
Costruita intorno al XIII secolo, la cerchia correva tutto intorno al perimetro della città, in corrispondenza di quelli che ora sono i Viali. Questa cinta muraria, di cui ora ci rimangono solo le porte e alcuni brevi tratti di muro, si estendeva per più di sette chilometri ed era circondata da un fossato sull'esterno.
Tra il 1902 e il 1906 le mura furono abbattute ma, grazie anche all'intervento di alcuni notabili dell'epoca, le porte vennero mantenute integre ad eccezione di Porta San Mamolo e Porta Sant'Isaia.
Porta Lame fu eretta nel XIII secolo, vicino al porto della cttà e alla salara. La strada che dipartiva da essa portava alla parte bassa della pianura, coperta di acquitrini, da cui il nome lame, termine latino per palude. Nel 1334 fu dotata di ponti levatoi, mentre tra il 1674 e il 1677 l'originario cassero fu abbattuto, e la porta ottenne l'attuale aspetto venendo ricostruita in stile barocco. Il 7 novembre 1944 vide una cruenta battaglia tra nazifascisti e partigiani; la vittoria di questi ultimi è ricordata dalle statue bronzee poco fuori dalla porta, che fu riportata agli antichi splendori tra il 2007 e il 2009.

Porta Lame belongs to the third and most recent city walls ring of Bologna, the Circla.
Built around the XIIIth century, the city walls surrounded the whole city's perimeter, along the streets that nowadays are called i Viali. At the time the city walls had a lenght of more than seven kilometers but nowadays only the gateways and small portions of walls remain.
Between 1902 and 1906 the walls were demolished but, thanks to the intercession of many important men, all the gateways were saved, except for Porta San Mamolo and Porta Sant'Isaia.
Porta Lame was built during XIII century, near the city harbor and salara (the salt warehouse). The road leaving the gateway led to a marshland, from which the gate was named after (lame is the latin word for swamp). In 1334 two drawbridges were built; between 1674 and 1677 the original tower was demolished and rebuilt in a baroque style, still visible today. On 7th November 1944 the Partisans harshly fought the Nazis in front of the gateway, and two bronze statue now honour the victory of the formers. The gateway was eventually renewed between 2007 and 2009.
