The National Hockey League was created at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal on November 26, 1917.
The Stanley Cup is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the 1892 Governor General of Canada. He purchased the decorative cup in London for 10 guineas (around $50 at the time).
The winning team is allowed to engrave up to 52 team members' names on Stanley Cup.
There are two Canadian teams that are leading the list of the Stanley Cup winners. The Montreal Canadiens won the trophy 23 times and the Toronto Maple Leafs has won it 13 times.
The longest playoff game due to overtime was recorded in the year 1936 . Detroit Red Wings defeated the Montreal Maroons after six overtime periods. In fact, both the teams played three full games in a single night by doing this.
