Background:
On friday the 15th of February 2019 Vespucci College (a Dutch high school on Curacao) organized Discovery Day. All pupils of the school learned about the culture and nature of Curacao through geocaching. The school was divided within four themes: Arts & Literature, Monuments & History, Nature and Geography & Geology. The pupils prepared geocaches with different subjects within these four themes and on Discovery Day these caches were hidden by the pupils.
Vespucci College hopes to learn locals and tourists about the culture and nature of Curacao through these caches too! Happy caching!
The cache:
This cache is dedicated to the widely spread cerion snails. The cerion is a genus of small to medium-sized tropical air-breathing land snails. The cerion is endemic to the Caribbean region. The name cerion is based on the Greek word kerion, signifying honeycomb, and is given to these shells because the form of the shell resembles that of a beehive. The cerion occurs en masse with local densities of more than 100 specimen per square meter.
The cache is located on the Hato-vlakte and can be reached through a dirt road which can be entered at the coordinates as described. There is a sign that says entrance is forbidden but that's not the case. During the day there is a barrier that is usually already open or it will be opened by the person in a small tollhouse.
Did you know that in the past they used the cerion snails as food for turkeys?
This cache was made by Joshua (4c), Toon (4c) and Jaheim (4c) of Vespucci College.
