Geocache Description:

Seal

Franklin County, Missouri is celebrating its bi-centennial this year (2019).   In commemoration of this year long celebration, I will be placing a number of geocaches around the county celebrating this historic event.

The very first Franklin County courthouse was located in the very tiny town of New Port, Missouri.  The first county court was held there in January, 1821, and the last session at New Port was November 7, 1826. There is now a plaque commenting the site placed there in a ceremony in September 2018. See geocache: https://coord.info/GC83CGQ.

Then, in 1825, on petition of a majority of the people, the Missouri General Assembly passed an act for the removal of the seat of justice to some point near the central part of the county ... Union was agreed upon. A log court house was built, in 1828, at a cost of $844.97, and this was occupied until a brick building was erected in 1849.

These three "less permanent" buildings were used for the court house until the present building was started in 1922 and completed and dedicated in 1923. Sadly, George Alfred Carlisle II, died in a construction accident on October 23, 1922, leaving behind his wife and seven children, the youngest being but six weeks old. The courthouse was renovated and rededicated again in 2010. However, today most of the official business of Franklin County is conducted in the two newly-built annexes to the Northeast and Southeast corners across the streets of the 1923 courthouse.

To log this cache, you will need to visit the courthouse and gather some information from 3 places on the perimeter of the property. The final is at N 38 26.ABC W 091 00.DEF. To find the final you will need to collect the following information:

A = Sum 1st digit plus last digit of time capsule
B = 1st digit of number following the (c) on statue of Ben Franklin
C = Sum 1st digit plus last digit of date by quote by Abe Lincoln

D - # of "1"s on rock memorial stone
E - # of words on rock memorial stone
F - Sum 1st digit plus 2nd digit on book on statue's knee

The WP's and the final cache are available 24/7. The final is within walking distance from the courthouse or street parking is very close by.
