Chiesa di San Bernardino
Alla fine del sec. XIII esisteva di sicuro a Villatico un piccolo tempio, perché le testimonianze affermano che a quell’antica comunità era assicurato un servizio religioso. Solo verso la fine del XV sec. La chiesa fu dedicata a San Bernardino, un predicatore senese che attraversò a piedi l’Italia predicando la riforma religiosa, la giustizia sociale e operando a favore della pace tra le città allora in conflitto. Si recò anche in Valtellina e per questo toccò il suolo di Villatico.
L’edificio, lungo i secoli costituì il centro della vita religiosa e sociale della locale comunità contadina. La sua antichità appare dall’impianto architettonico basilicale. L’aula a tre navate è suddivisa da semplici colonne in muratura ordinaria con cinque campate ad arcate a tutto sesto, con volte a botte per quella centrale e a crociera per quelle laterali. L’altare maggiore è caratterizzato da sinuose linee settecentesche in marmo nero di Varenna intarsiato da altri marmi policromi. Le pareti del presbiterio, dell’abside e dei due archi trionfali che presentano un apparato decorativo di autore ignoto, si rifanno allo stile barocco e sono tutti realizzati con la tecnica dell’affresco a trompe d’oeil.

According to ancient documents that described a religious service, at the end of the XIII century there was for sure in Villatico a small temple. Only towards the end of the fifteenth century the church was dedicated to San Bernardino, a preacher from Siena who crossed Italy preaching the religious reform, social justice and worked for peace between the cities then in conflict. He also traveled in Valtellina visiting Villatico too.
The building, over the centuries formed the center of religious and social life of the local farming community. Its antiquity appears from its architecture. The building is divided in three naves by simple columns with five bays with pointed arches, barrel-vaulted to the central and with cross vaults to the side. The altar is characterized by sinuous eighteenth-century lines made in black marble of Varenna inlaid with other colored marbles. The walls of the chancel, the apse and the two triumphal arches that have a decorative of an unknown artist, refer to the Baroque style and are all made with the technique of trompe l'oeil.
