OZGrumpy: Making way for more exciting caches, keeping the game board fresh. I currently have 224 physical hides over 5 years. This is the first cache I have ever archived, sad to see it go, its popular with travelers arriving and leaving from Adelaide Airport.

Geocache Description:


The Cache

This un-themed cache is near the Mellor Park Tennis Club. There is an abundance of old and magnificent trees in this park, many worthy of a hide, but I have selected a location away from the park crowds. Construction is now finished (June 2022) and the cache has been relocated back to its original location.

Some Mellor History

John White Mellor (1868-1931) apparently lived at ‘Holmfirth’, a stately 2 storey residence on Henley Beach Road just west of Tapleys Hill Rd until his marriage in 1913. John Mellor was a member of the Reedbeds Rifle Club, as were his three brothers. John was a crack shot and won a South Australian Rifle Challenge Cup in 1920.

John married (Elizabeth) Maud Elliott in 1913, the year that his father John Fox Mellor died. They had four sons (one dying in infancy) and one daughter were born between 1915 and 1925. John and Maud Mellor built their new home ‘Mellor Park’ in Lockleys which was finished in October 1915. This smaller home, currently the Serene Aged Care Facility, is now in Myzantha Street Lockleys and near Mellor Park (this reserve). In 1915 the house and garden were surrounded by farmland and the estate extended to the River Torrens.
