Dr. Slump & Arale o, più semplicemente, Dr. Slump, è un manga disegnato e scritto dal mangaka Akira Toriyama; fu pubblicato in Giappone tra il 1979 e il 1984 ed ebbe subito successo, tanto che vennero prodotte due serie di cartoni animati, una nel 1981, durata cinque anni, e un remake nel 1997, durato due anni. Inoltre, il manga fu esportato in diversi paesi, tra cui l’Italia, dove arrivò nel 1996, terminando le pubblicazioni nel 1999.
Il manga racconta le vicende di Senbee Norimaki, un inventore e scienziato noto come Dr. Slump, e di Arale, un robot creato dallo stesso Dr. Slump con le fattezze di una bambina 13enne, completamente indistinguibile da un essere umano. Inizialmente lui la spaccerà per sua sorella minore, salvo poi rimangiarsi la parola una volta che la bugia sta per essere scoperta e dichiarando di averla trovata come sorpresa in un pacchetto di patatine. Arale è una bambina molto esuberante e ingenua e, non conoscendo il mondo che la circonda, è desiderosa di scoprirlo, accogliendo le novità con grande entusiasmo. È molto socievole e amichevole con tutti e questo la porterà a integrarsi facilmente nella piccola comunità del Villaggio dei Pinguini, il villaggio di campagna dove vive.

Inoltre, Arale è dotata di incredibile forza fisica e velocità, cosa che le farà vivere diverse avventure e nelle quali scombussolerà la vita degli abitanti del tranquillo villaggio dove abita. Il suo unico punto debole, oltre alla miopia, è che il suo funzionamento dipende dal Robobitan A, un misterioso fluido inventato dal Dr. Slump, che funge da carburante per la robottina: nel momento in cui la scorta si esaurisce, Arale si blocca nella posizione in cui è, come pietrificata.
Una delle caratteristiche più particolari della giovane Arale è quella di essere attratta dalle cacche che trova in giro, che regolarmente raccoglie con un bastoncino e corre a mostrare a tutti, come se fossero la cosa più bella del mondo.
Arale fa la sua comparsa anche in alcuni episodi della ben più nota serie Dragon Ball, anch’essa opera di Toriyama, dove aiuta il protagonista Goku a sconfiggere il Generale Blue e a impossessarsi di una delle Sfere del Drago. In quest’occasione si scopre anche che Arale può salire sulla Nuvola d’Oro di Goku, dimostrando quindi di avere un cuore puro. Arale tornerà nuovamente in Dragon Ball Super, dove riuscirà a sconfiggere Goku e Vegeta, dimostrando di essere la più forte dell’universo (cosa confermata anche dallo stesso Toriyama).

Dr. Slump & Arale, or simply Dr. Slump, is a manga series written and illustrated by mangaka Akira Toriyama; it was published In Japan between 1979 and 1984, obtaining a great success; it was adapted twice into an anime television series: first from 1981 to 1986 and then from 1997 to 1999. Also, the manga was exported in different countries, including Italy, where it was first published in 1996, ending in 1999.
The plot is about Senbee Norimaki, a scientist and inventor also known as Dr. Slump, and Arale, a robot created by Dr. Slump himself who looks like a 13 year old girl, completely similar to a human being. At first, he tries to fake her for his younger sister but later, once the lie is about to be discovered, he will declare he found here as a prize in a bag of chips. Arale is a very exuberant and naïve child and, not knowing anything about the world around her, is eager to discover it, welcoming every new thing with great enthusiasm. She is very sociable and friendly and this will lead her to integrate easily in the small community of the Penguin Village, the small country village where she lives.

Also, Arale has great physical strength and speed, and this will make her live many adventures, usually disrupting the quiet lives of the inhabitants of the village where she lives. Her only weakness, in addition to myopia, is that her correct working depends on Robobitan A, a mysterious fluid invented by Dr. Slump which serves as fuel for the child robot: once the stock runs out, she freezes in the position she is, like petrified.
One of the most weird traits of Arale is that she is attracted by poops: she usually collects those she finds and, with the help of a stick, takes them around the village showing them to everyone, as they were the most beautiful thing in the world.
Arale also appears in some episodes of the well-known series Dragon Ball, another work by Toriyama, where she helps Goku to fight and defeat General Blue, obtaining one of the Dragon Balls. On this occasion, it’s found that Arale can stay on the Flying Nimbus, thus proving she has a pure heart. Arale will return in Dragon Ball Super, where she manages to defeat Goku and Vegeta, proving to be the strongest in the whole universe (something confirmed by Toriyama himself).
