Convent Park is now a micro cache! If you logged this cache before when it was a virtual and would like to visit it again now that it is a traditional cache, I encourage you to do so.
Most people don't know this park is here, below street level, worth seeing and finding. This tucked-away little amphitheater and fountain are new, and this was a parking lot as late as 2001! This area reopened after 13 months of work. The entire river has been rebuilt. Major repairs were needed on cracking retaining walls and eroded banks.
You can walk here from anywhere on the Riverwalk or park on the street about 150 ft. away. This is also a new point of access to the river for the disabled.
Look in the bottom of the fountain for "found objects" stuck into the colorful tilework. New mosaic tile murals, punched copper lampposts, and new fountains flowing under walkways and into the river were also added. Walk upstream about 5 minutes and you'll find a "forest" made of concrete made to look like wood. Walk downstream 100 ft. and find the mosaic tile mural on the wall under the bridge. More on the river can be seen at the Edwards Aquifer website.
And why do you suppose this is "Convent Park?" If you cross the river on the old steel bridge you will see what was once a girls school run by the French Catholic Sisters, the Ursuline Academy. Construction began in 1848. They moved out in 1965. The property sat vacant until the current user came in and renovated and restored the property. Go find the restaurant for a great lunch.
Original contents of this camo-taped Altoids tin which has been cleverly concealed within a covenient arm's length of one of the walks within this park: bandaids, earplugs, 3 bags of tea, and a Where's George dollar.
