Geocache Description:

Welcome to Te Karo Bay more commonly known as Sailors Grave.

This cache will bring you to a look out allowing you to take all this beauty in for processing. You'll then be left with a decision between carrying on to Otara Bay (to collect Otara Bay Hideaway) or to return back to Te Karo Bay. Trust me, Otara Bay is almost more stunning - carry on.

So what's with the name? You've probably guessed correct but this grave is actually thought to be the oldest sailor's grave in New Zealand. In May 1842, 22 year old William Simpson, a sailor on board the British Navy ship HMS Tortoise, was accidentally killed while loading kauri spars onto the ship in Te Karo Bay. According to the original kauri headboard "he drowned in the surf", however, another report states he was crushed between a log and the side of the ship. Deaths among sailors weren't uncommon back then but burying crew 'at sea' was the standard practice. Land graves were rarer and serve as a reminder of the treacherous conditions sailors endured. The grave itself has subjected to some pretty intense vandalism over the last 177 years and is now surrounded by a white picket fence and is maintained by the N.Z. Navy.

Spend some time here and enjoy yourselves. Shade can get a little scarce in the summer months so it's wise to bring some with you. The sand can get a bit hot too.

FTF honours go to mumandgirls - congratulations
