GeoTour Stop #11: Johnson Park
Originally designed in 1937, Johnson Park preserves the very ground Norfolk’s first mill was constructed on. This park was built by the citizens of Norfolk who found themselves unemployed during the Great Depression. They were paid 30 cents an hour for their work on the park. With the help of park board chairman, Nels P. Johnson, the city was able to incorporate features such as a sunken garden, an "outdoor living room for picnics", a pond and water fall, flower beds and playground equipment. Today, Johnson Park has plans to undergo expansive upgrades to return it back to this former glory. It also lies at the heart of the North Fork of the Elkhorn River and Downtown Norfolk on the River Point.
