GeoTour Stop #18: Big Bang Boom at Skyview Park

Skyview Park has long been a host to community-wide events for the Norfolk area. The lake was originally constructed in 1971 to combat flooding issues facing the city. However, thanks to the vision of former Mayor Jim Miller, Skyview Park is now a beloved community gathering space, complete with 2 and a half miles of concrete trail, fishing and ice-fishing, boating, a large playground area, picnic shelters complete with tables and barbeque grills, a large band stand, a cross country course, a state accredited arboretum, and a fitness station along the hiking/biking trail. Enjoy family fun time with kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and paddle boats available at the Skyview Marina at Skyview Lake.

Fourth of July fireworks have been a tradition in Norfolk and at Skyview Park for many years. Orville Carlisle, who at one time owned Carlisle Shoes in Norfolk, was a fan of pyrotechnics and organized the first show with homemade rockets. Carlisle’s first show at Skyview Park was in 1976 in honor of the US Bicentennial. Skyview Park remains the site of the 4th of July celebration every year, hosted by the Big Bang Boom Committee.

Fun Fact: Orville Carlisle was the inventor of the model rocket engine that is used world-wide to this day by model rocketry enthusiasts!
