GeoTour Stop #14: Thurl Ravenscroft
Born in 1914, Norfolk native Thurl Ravenscroft served as a navigator in the US
Army Air Transport Command in World War II before settling in Hollywood. An
accomplished singer, he performed with many major stars, including Jim Nabors
and Elvis Presley. He was best known, however, for his voice-over work as Tony
the Tiger in countless advertisements for Frosted Flakes (in both English and
Spanish). His voice can also be heard in many Disney attractions. In 1966, he
was inadvertently omitted from the credits of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!"
where he sings "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch". Producers Chuck Jones and Dr.
Seuss took out a full-page ad to correct the oversight. In 1996 he and his wife
June retired to southern California, although he still did occasional work as
Tony. He died in 2005 of prostate cancer.
