Daewang-am, or the Great King's Rock, about 200m off the coast here is the undersea tomb of King Munmu (661-6X1), the 30th ruler of the Silla Kingdom. The rocky islet abot 20m long has a small pond at the center and at the bottom of it is a granite stone 3.Ym long, 2.9m wide and 0.9m high.
It is said that the king was cremated in a Buddhist ritual and his ashes buried here according to the king's instruction that he be cremated and buried in the East Sea so that he could become a dragon to protect Shilla.
The rocky islet is closely related with Igyeondae pavilion and Gameunsa Temple near here. It is the only underwater tomb in Korea, the tomb symbolizes the king's dedication to national defense. Some people say, however, that this is where the king's ashes were scattered, not buried.
