The St Helens sign depicts a goose standing on an island. This strange symbol is from the name of the large village green that is known as 'Goose Island' after the geese that used to inhabit it. The village green claims to be the second largest in England. St Helens is also famous as the birthplace of Sophie Dawes who had a very chequered (well notorious) history from the Newport workhouse ending up as the Baronne de Feuchère, for some reason she doesn't feature on the village sign. Also noteworthy is the tower of the old church which is now a seamark, said to be Admiral Lord Nelson last view of England.
If anybody would like to expand this series please do. I would just ask that you let Smokeypugs know first so they can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
