L’isolata Pieve dei Santi Ansano e Tommaso che precede il borgo Castelvecchio è uno degli esempi più interessanti di romanico della valle.
Incerta è la data di edificazione: secondo alcuni tra il 9° e il 10° secolo, secondo altri nell’11° secolo.
Si ritiene che fu realizzata dai Maestri Comacini su un preesistente edificio, di probabile epoca longobarda. Il primo documento certo riguardante la chiesa è una carta dell'879.
Ben poco rimane dell’edificio originario a causa degli invasivi rifacimenti, il più importante dei quali fu quello del 1875, anno in cui la Pieve venne dichiarata monumento nazionale.
L’orientamento è a Sud-Est e due luci arrivano a illuminare la cripta solamente in due momenti dell’anno, cioè quando il sole è alla sua massima e minima altezza. Ciò accade alle ore 18,30 del solstizio d’estate e alle ore 12,25 del solstizio d’inverno.
In alto sulla facciata vi è la scultura di un uomo nell'atto di abbracciare due donne: potrebbe essere Gesù con la Maddalena e la Vergine Maria, oppure Dio che si riconcilia con Adamo ed Eva. Prova ad andare dietro la chiesa: vedrai la stessa identica scena nella parte esattamente opposta. Curioso vero?
Ma c’è un altro mistero: osserva la parte superiore della facciata…ci sono alcuni spaventosi mascheroni! Non ti sembrano rappresentazioni africane o addirittura appartenenti ai Maya e agli Aztechi?

The isolated Pieve of Saints Ansano and Tommaso near Castelvecchio is one of the most interesting examples of Romanesque architecture of the valley.
The date of construction is uncertain and it’s between the 9th and the 11th century. It is claimed that it was built by Magistri Comacini (masters from Como) on a pre-existing building, probably of Langobardic era. The first document regarding the church is a paper dated 879.
Today the church is different from the original because of the many invasive remakes: the most important of them was made in 1875, when the Pieve was declared a national monument.
The orientation is South-East and the crypt is enlighted by sunlight only in two moments of the year, when the sun is at its maximum and minimum height. This happens at 18.30 o’ clock of the summer solstice and at 12.25 o’ clock of the winter solstice.
In the highest part of the facade there is the sculpture of a man embracing 2 women: it could be Jesus Christ with Mary Magdalene and Virgin Mary, or God reconciling with Adam and Eve. Go to the back of the Pieve and there you will see exactly the same scene. Very odd, isnt’t it?
There is an other mistery: look at the upper part of the facade…you will see some demonic faces, named mascheroni! They seem African or even Maya and Aztec representations!
