Geocache Description:

The starting coordinates will take you to the gravesite of John Joesph Woods. He is known for composing the music that goes with the words to the New Zealand National Anthem. He was born in Tasmania, one of 15 children and after qualifying as a teacher he moved to New Zealand and eventually was appointed as head teacher in Lawrence. He was a keen musician and was reputed to be compotent on 12 different instruments. While in Lawrence he married and been settled decided to buy a piano. At this time German made pianos had a great reputation and he purchased one made by Lipp & Sons in Stuggard and it made its journey from Dunedin by horse drawn transport.

John, after reading about a competition to compose a tune to which the poem "God Defend New Zealand" could be sung spent the night at his upright Lipp piano composing a tune for which he won ten guineas. The new song had its first performance on Christmas Day in 1876, in Queens Theatre, Dunedin.

A year after winning the competition he gave up his teaching job and became Clerk of the newly formed Tuapeka County Council. Outside his devotion to his professional career he had an active life in cricket, bowls, cycling and tennis. He was also a keen gardner and cultivated over 300 varities of daffodils. He was a motivating force behind the poplars and silver birch trees planted in Lawrence's streets. Many have since been replaced.

In 1977 Her Majesty The Queen agreed that God Defend New Zealand could be approved as a national anthem at occasions of the nation's involvement, but God Save The Queen remained as the "Head of State" anthem should the soverign or representative thereof be present.

The Lipp upright piano is in a South Island home with a Woods family connection.

The home that he lived in in Lawrence is still present on the corner of Lismore and Lancaster Streets. See GC1P79H Anthem (Otago).
