Geocache Description:

Much of the nation was transfixed by the dramatic rescue during the night of July 27, 2002, of nine miners trapped 240 feet below the surface in a flooded chamber of the Quecreek Mine near Somerset, Pennsylvania. The purpose of this virtual geocache is to guide potentially interested geocachers to a location immediately overlooking the shaft from which the miners were brought to the surface. The site is less than five miles north of Exit 10 off the Pennsylvania Turnpike at Somerset, PA. It is about twelve miles west of the Heroes of Flight 93 Geocache near Shanksville, PA, and somewhat more upbeat in nature.

Updates on the Quecreek Mining Accident are provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental of Environmental Protection, and mine rescue stories can be found in the Somerset Daily American . The rescue shaft is on the property of Dormel Farms, which coined the phrase:

*Best Crop Ever - We Raise Miners*!

Geocachers wishing to claim credit for this find should answer the following question via e-mail to the cache placers (Profile above): What is the INSCRIPTION IN WHITE LETTERS above the doors of the large dark greenish-grey building next to the parking area?
