Pat’s Bluff is a less well known lookout along the Eastern ridge of O'Reilly's Plateau and affords spectacular views over the Albert and Logan River valleys to the Great Dividing Range.
The Bluff track (unmarked) branches off the graded Python Rock track behind the Centenary Seat at about the halfway point. It continues as a well defined footpad though rainforest before bursting out into an open area of tall eucalyptus trees along the Eastern cliff line. Depending on conditions, you may have to negotiate fallen vegetation as this track is less well maintained. Overall it's not difficult to follow and there are no nasty elevation changes to negotiate. The return trip is approx. 5.5km, allow approx. 2 hours.
As you approach the published coordinates (which is a rocky outcrop near Pats Bluff), you will pass a power pole bringing power lines up from the valley floor below. Grab the numbers off the pole.
Continue on to Pat's Bluff and admire the views.
Within 100m either side of Pat's Bluff is a very distinctive tree overhanging the cliff (see picture). It has a hole in a branch about head level which would make an ideal cache location, but the final is not here. Stand by the tree, taking great care as it's very close to the edge. Take (mark) a waypoint and get the coordinates.
Add the offset values below to the coordinates you took at the tree:
S + 0.A35
E + 1.B71
Where: A is the 4th number on the pole and B is the 2nd number on the pole (reading top to bottom).
The cache is hidden along Lamington NP Road, not in the Park itself.
