Geocache Description:

Sai quali erano gli antichi mestieri di questa terra?
Ogni Castella ne aveva uno tipico.
San Quirico: i fonditori di bronzo. Fin dal 15° secolo si specializzarono nella produzione di campane e avevano come simbolo una piccola lucertola.
Pontito: i figurinai. Questi artigiani realizzavano statuine religiose in gesso, vendute in tutta Europa. Questa attività si svolse dalla metà del 1800 fino alla metà del 1900.
Castelvecchio: i gelatai (vedi cache GC84DA2)
Vellano, Pietrabuona e Stiappa: gli scalpellini. Questi artigiani erano specializzati nella lavorazione della pietra serena e solo a Vellano ce n’erano 300 oltre a 50 cave.
Pietrabuona, Calamari, Ponte di Sorana: cartai e cartiere (vedi GC84CWB)
Medicina: i potatori di olivi. Infatti questa Castella era chiamata il paese dei potini.
Sorana: i fagioli (vedi cache GC84E2N)
Inoltre in tutta la valle vi erano i ramai (artigiani che lavoravano il rame), i carbonai e i corbellai che con il legno di castagno realizzavano panieri e cesti.

Which were the ancient crafts of this area? Have you got any idea?
In the past each Castella had a typical craft.
San Quirico: bronze smelters. Since 15th century they specialized in the production of bells and a small lizard was their symbol.
Pontito: figurinai. These artisans made plaster religious figurines, traded throughout Europe. This happened from mid-1800s until mid-1900s.
Castelvecchio: ice cream makers (see cache GC84DA2)
Vellano, Pietrabuona and Stiappa: stonemasons. These artisans worked pietra serena. In Vellano itself they were 300 and there were 50 quarries.
Pietrabuona, Calamari, Ponte di Sorana: paper factories (see cache GC84CWB)
Medicine: olive tree pruners.
Sorana: beans (see cache GC84E2N)
In the whole valley there were also artisans who worked the copper, charcoal burners and artisans who made baskets with chestnut wood.
