Geocache Description:




La Pieve dei Santi Sisto e Martino è tra gli edifici sacri più antichi di tutta la zona, ed è documentata dall’anno 910.
E’ detta pieve la chiesa con annesso il fonte battesimale.
La Pieve di Vellano sorge al di fuori delle mura della castella, in una posizione defilata rispetto al paese. Ciò non deve sorprendere, perché era necessario che essa fosse centrale rispetto al territorio amministrato e che avesse acque sorgive vicine per le esigenze battesimali.
Siccome però questo luogo non era adatto alla difesa, il castello non le venne costruito accanto, ma più in alto sul colle.
Al suo interno sono di particolare interesse: il fonte battesimale del 1400, due statue in legno dipinto del 15° secolo raffiguranti S. Ansano e Sisto Papa, l’affresco della decapitazione di Papa San Sisto, dove i personaggi indossano i tipici calzari dell’epoca.
Meritevole di una visita è anche la cripta.

Pieve of Saints Sisto and Martino is among the oldest sacred buildings of this area, and has been evidenced since the year 910.
Commonly Pieve is a church with a baptismal font.
Pieve of Vellano is placed outside the village walls, because it had to be in the centre of the administered territory and nearby spring waters, essential for baptismal needs.
Pieve was in a place not suitable for defense, and this is why the castle was built higher up on the hill.
Inside the church you can see: the 15th century baptismal font, two 15th century painted wooden statues representing S. Ansano and Sisto Papa, the fresco of the decapitation of Pope San Sisto where the characters wear the typical socks of the time.
The crypt is very suggestive and it is worth the visit.
